My parents lease for their 2014 Camry SE is coming to an end and they’ve been looking for a new car. Initially my Dad wanted to get into another lease, something like a Toyota Highlander, GMC Acadia or a Ford Explorer Sport. He got numbers back on a lease & purchase of an Explorer Sport with an MSRP of $51,000.
Now, my parents have always been frugal with automotive purchases even though they could splurge if they wanted to. We came to the conclusion that since they’re first grandchild was born two weeks ago they would be going down to Houston a lot to make visits. So I basically said “get something you want to be in for 12 hours”.
Leasing began to make no sense when you’re: a) planning on making some 1600 mile trips b) when you have the income to purchase.
So he started looking into uses BMW X5's including one in particular in Lincoln. It was a 2013 (older style) with 40k miles and not much for options. “Internet” price was 31k.
This is when I took over. “I got you fam” I said and started looking in Houston. Since we are going there for Thanksgiving it was a pretty good option to search there.
Immediately I found a 2014 (newer style) with several options including the M Sport package. 40k miles and an asking price of 39k. Obviously more but still around the budget he had. The Carfax checked out and was very promising, but when he contacted the dealer (Texas Direct Auto) they said they didn’t have it.
Fast forward 3 hours later and the salesman called back and was like “my bad, it wasn’t in our system since we just got it in”.
Fast forward to 3 days later and the paperwork has been signed and they’ll be picking it up in a couple of weeks.
Pretty excited about this car purchase. It’s been beige-mobile after beige-mobile. Glad to see my parents finally letting loose a little bit.

Why anyone would buy a for explorer over that... I can’t even think of a reason.

Speaking of McParland, whatever happened to Steve Letho ?

He’s doing his stuff on podcasts/you tube now. Apparently he’s also writing for Road and Track’s website, but I never go there.

How was it, working with that dealership? They post a lot of stuff that grabs my interest.

Two words: German maintenance ;)

That does look like a pretty nice place to spend 12 hours.

Much less lease an Explorer over that. No money down the payments were around 650/month for a lease! I don’t feel like whipping out my calculator but I bet with no money down the loan payments for the X5 are the same.

After owning three German cars and one American car, so far the American car was the worst maintenance wise. But the American car was also the newest...
Also, Warranty!

Fairly straight forward. I’ve been there a couple times when I lived in Houston. Was looking at a G8 GT awhile back. Prices were about on par as what you’d expect from anywhere else. The only thing that sucks about browsing the lot is they never put prices on the cars so you’re constantly on your phone looking up the car to find the price. Idk if they still do that but that was the case a few years ago.

Warranties rule.
I’ve only owned two late-model used vehicles. The were both American CPO vehicles, and they were both pieces of shit. My ‘06 Sierra that I bought new, however, has been reliable as could be. I’ve had good luck with new cars, and good luck with old beaters, but late-model used has only hurt me.

Right? Thats what I liked the most about this generation compared to the previous.

There’s still a bit of the factory warranty left. I advised my Dad to look into one though.

Whoa! $650/month for a freaking Explorer!?! That’s insane!

I’ve always felt that you should have along enough warranty to have the vehicle paid off before it’s up. That way you’re not stuck with car payments AND repair bills. I didn’t take my own advice when we bought my wife anew CX-5 a couple years ago, but our previous Mazda was so flawless I decided it was worth the risk.

I’m the idiot that has a car with no warranty but still has payments lol. I’ll be crossing my fingers for the next few years.

Great choice. The X5 is a favorite of mine. As for getting it serviced, the BMW dealer in Lincoln is fantastic. They’ll bring a service loaner to your parent’s home/work and bring their car back for service. Extremely convenient.

But I’m in central Nebraska, lol. We have a BMW dealer in Grand Island who has a great service department the last time I checked. It was one of the main reasons we looked at BMW’s over other luxury brands.

Are Texas Direct Auto and David McDavid the only car dealerships in the state of Texas?
![]() 11/09/2016 at 16:35 |

Texas Direct Auto takes up nearly 1/3 of the state, hard to fit any other dealerships!

We have a BMW dealer in Grand Island
I did not know that. I actually thought the only two in the entire state were in Omaha in Lincoln. But yeah, that means no need to drive all the way to Lincoln.

I had a couple BMWs between 2002-2005 and great experiences with the dealer.
Except when they ran out of BMW loaners and gave me a Cadillac DTS to drive around.

Been there, done that, it’s no fun.

Well done and congrats to your folks! The current X5 is pretty good (even during autocross in the rain...that was a fun morning), they’ll enjoy it for sure.

I might have to borrow it for some snow drifting at the track this winter!
